Screenprints/Etchings
Screenprints employ a stencil technique, with ink squeegeed through a mesh onto paper. It was initially developed as a commercial printing but emerging as an art form in the 1930's, stimulated by WPA grants to the arts. It is notable for bright, flat colors and utilizes a variety of stencil methods to block out portions of the screen, including sharp edged paper stencils, crayon or brush strokes and photo images. The screen material was first silk, but now polyester materials are more common. I use water-based inks and use 10-20 printings to comprise the final image onto acid-free paper. Matted screenprints are $150 and above; contact me at echarney@msn.com for pricing and availability of individual prints.
